The State of Louisiana and Ascension Parish are providing an extraordinary amount of public money to Hyundai for its steel mill. Officials say that Hyundai is a $5.8 billion dollar project but fail to mention that Louisiana taxpayers are footing the bill.
There has been intense secrecy surrounding the project and no public accounting of the costs. What follows are the agreements we’ve uncovered through public records requests. The Advocate has reported the total package to exceed $2 billion dollars.
Through documents and Cooperative Endeavor Agreements signed by Ascension Parish we have uncovered just some of the state and parish obligations to Hyundai.
